Chapter 2: Freinds

Jed sat down. His hands hurt from slamming an iron pole against a tree for the past hour. He had found this place during one of his "episodes" as Tory called them, the times when he was just feeling so angry at the world for what happened to his parents, and he had to just get away from everyone.

It was a large empty warehouse that had been abandoned for years. It had a large tree growing up through the floor, and he always came here, when he got feeling like this.

He leaned his head against the tree, and closed his eyes, thinking about how he had ended up here. His mom had died 5 years ago, back when he was 11. His dad had done his best to keep Jed and himself together, but last year, his dad had been killed in the line of duty, protecting those who had killed him. When Jed opened the door and saw the cop standing there, he knew immediately what had happened. And he had made sure the world new his displeasure as he screamed at Officer Williams to just get the fuck away.

It had been sergeant Williams who had been trying to catch him for the past few months. Jed sighed and rubbed his hands. After some time just sitting there, he got up and walked over to the only way in our out of the warehouse, second story window next to a tree. After a short jump, he caught a branch and climbed down, before making his way home.

The first half of the trip was uneventful, but walking past a donut shop proved troublesome. He had been watching the ground, when behind him he heard the familiar voice of Officer Williams telling him to stop. Jed stopped and turned around, which obviously surprised the officer. I bet he expected me to run thought Jed. Oh well, his problem. Verbally he asked, "Yes, Officer Williams?"

The man sighed. "You're under arrest for shoplifting, Jed." He sounded sad.
Jed just shrugged. "Look. We both know the drill. You try and cuff me I try and run. I haven't been caught yet, and I know you don't want to have to arrest me. So if you'll excuse me, I have to get home."

Without waiting for Williams to respond, Jed took off down the street, running as fast as he could. Good thing I'm in shape, he thought as he bolted down the street. A quick corner had him running down an alley, another quick turn and a leap and he was on a fire escape. After several buildings, he used another fire escape to get to the ground, and looked for a bus stop. He managed to catch a bus back to his side of town. He stopped and used the twenty Tor had given him to buy some bread, some juice, and treated them all to a pack of candy each.

He got himself a bag of Skittles (he loved Skittles), got Sam a bag of Almond M&Ms, and got Tor a bag of yogurt covered raisins. He paid and pocketed the change, before taking the bag and leaving the store, stifling the urge to pocket a bag of Mentos on the way out. He the rest of the trip home was uneventful, though he did do a lot of thinking as he went.
When he came through the window, he was surprised to see a note on the door across the room, saying that Tor and Sam had gone out and would be back soon. Jed shrugged and walked downstairs to put the stuff away. When he was done, he climbed onto the roof and sat there, looking at the acre or so of tree dotted field that the house sat in.

His parents had found the house a few years before Jed was born, and his dad had built it himself. Now it was abandoned, or it was according to the city, but no one would buy it, and the city was too busy to care about it, so Jed, Sam, and Tory all had a place to live. Jed grinned as he thought about it. Funny how the system that wanted to lock him away had given him a home. He sighed and looked over in the direction of a sound Jed hadn't heard before, as a plume of dust made itself seen over to the south side of the house.

He lay down and edged up to the top of the roof, watching the plume. He could make out two figures, and it looked like they were riding a quad. As they got closer, the figures resolved themselves into Sam and Tory. Jeds jaw dropped. He quickly regained his composure and slid down to the window, letting himself in. By the time he had made it to the back door, Sam and Tor were pulling up behind the porch.

"So? Whatcha think?" asked Sam, grinning from ear to ear. Tory was wearing an identical one, but her hair was more disheveled.
Jed shook his head. "What's that for?" he asked.
"So you don't have to walk everywhere." was Torys response as she got off the vehicle.
"So how did you get it?" Jed wondered.
Sam grinned, "You remember my website? Well I sold a rather useful part you lifted to some guy on E-bay. Got us plenty of cash for awhile."
This got Jed grinning. "You mean I won't have to go out and steal for awhile right?" He never told them, but whenever he did it, he felt really bad about it.
At there nods he continued grinning and thanked 'em both. "This is great!" he proclaimed. "oh, if we hooked up a trailer to this, it would make grocery trips much easier!"

Everyone agreed to this, and they all decided to go in to celebrate. Sam went to park it in the garage, from the sound of it, he had built a trap door in the back to get in and out, and disappeared around the house. Jed grinned and hugged Tory. "Thanks."

She grinned and hugged back. "What are friends for anyways? If it weren't for you, none of us would have survived out here."
Jed sighed. "If it weren't for me, you and Sam would be living in Huntington Beach, surfing and going to the best schools."
She grimaced. "And leave you behind? Not a chance in hell." she hugged him again, and Jed changed he subject. "Well, I got a surprise for you guys too."

He lead her to the kitchen, Sam joining them soon after, and all were soon happily eating their treats. Perhaps things, while not turning out for the best, had turned out decently after all.
What are freinds for, afterall?
