 Got GIMP, or some other tool of Photoshoppery? I'd recommend playing around with the Levels tab, you can bring out the high and low tones really well, and create some very polished pieces with it.
It's great for correcting for poor or flat lighting in a shot, or just making a touch-up, because it's so hard to get it just right. Hm, I'll have to try that. I liked the basic lighting, so I never tried working with that beyond the simple desat that I did.
